Bankruptcy Program for the 59h Academy of American and International Law
Each summer for the past 59 years, the Center for American and International Law located in Plano, Texas has hosted a 5 or 6-week residential, legal education program for non-US attorneys. On June 14, 2024, the John C. Ford Bankruptcy Inn of Dallas/Fort Worth again presented a one-day, "hands-on" seminar on bankruptcy and international insolvency to this year's students. There were 44 attorneys from 22 different countries in attendance. The day-long program centered on a hypothetical Indonesian construction company facing difficulties finishing building project with bank and creditor issues in the United States. All students were assigned roles from which to advocate and negotiate a resolution. The day included an overview of Chapters 11 and 15 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, breakout discussion groups in both the morning and afternoon sessions, plus lunch together to share background stories. The goal of each small group was to negotiate a solution to the problem satisfactory to all the constituent positions in the hypothetical. The final session was a gathering of all groups where representatives from each group presented their proposed resolution for comment by the attending bankruptcy judges.
