HELP! I Need Somebody! A Program About Mentoring and Professionalism
Through vignettes and discussions, this presentation sought to educate our members about the essential tenets of the American Inns of Court mission: practicing with the highest levels of civility, ethical conduct, and professionalism. The program focused on civility and professionalism, how to practice law with the highest degree of ethical standards, and on developing lasting mentor/mentee relationships. For mentoring, associates and barristers from the presenting group were asked what they were looking for in a mentor, and how to find mentors. Mentors were asked how they can be most effective in their role. Many of the mentees responded that they were seeking guidance focused on issues related to professionalism, and effective ways to either deflect or redirect unprofessional conduct. The program included a live “Mentor Game” (modeled on the “Dating Game” format) to encourage engagement and audience participation. A live panel discussion about effective mentoring. In highlighting the importance of mentoring, presenters made clear that every lawyer, regardless of their level of experience, may benefit from mentorship.
