Carnival of Conversations: Mastering Discourse in Law and Life
Following this year’s theme of “Legal Ethics in a Polarized World,” this immersive program focused on engaging civilly on challenging topics. To that end, the presenters designed a “Carnival of Conversations” that allowed pupillage groups to rotate through five carnival booths, engaging in hands-on exercises related to civil dialogue. As members moved between booths, they participated in dynamic activities that tested their listening skills, challenged their biases, and provided hands-on practice in managing misinformation, logical fallacies, and de-escalation techniques. Each booth was meticulously designed to blend legal education with interactive learning, utilizing techniques from cognitive science and adult learning theory to reinforce key concepts. In a world where civil discourse is becoming a lost art, this program provided a roadmap for restoring it—one conversation at a time.
