Don't Let Your Courtroom Antics Haunt You...Courtroom Civility and its Importance in Restoring Confidence in the Justice System in the Justice System
Courtroom civility has been declining and the public has been losing confidence in the judicial system. California Rule of Professional Conduct 8.2(a) attempts to address this problem by prohibiting lawyers from making false statements about a judicial officer or candidate. The program highlighted how actions of attorneys and judicial officers can impact the publics view and confidence in the judicial system. It explored the potential appearance of bias, proper and improper objections, and commenting to the media about pending litigation. It also included the subtopics of respect versus zealous advocacy as well as the general view on judicial independence and its effect on juries.
