This six-scene journey to understand defamation law begins when global phenomenon Taylor Swift learns that her ex-boyfriends have published a scathing op-ed in the New York Times announcing their intent to sue the popstar for defamatory statements that they allege Swift has made in her song lyrics and revealing their versions of the details of her past relationships. How will Swift defend herself against the lawsuit? And can she countersue for defamation? To find out, the cast takes Taylor on an “Eras Tour” of their own. Following the structure of Charles Dickens’s, A Christmas Carol, the ghost of Defamation Past (Alexander Hamilton), Not So Way Past (L.B. Sullivan),
Present Dissent (Justice Clarence Thomas), and Future Risk (Jack Sparrow—aka Jonny Depp) guide Taylor through four “eras” of defamation law. Channeling the concert-goer’s experience, hand strung friendship bracelets, a hallmark of attending Taylor Swift’s Eras
Tour were distributed. Attendees also enjoyed a photo booth complete with fun props and life-size cutouts of our Inn’s namesake, Dean Garland R. Walker, and of Taylor Swift.
