Law In Order: Special Briefing Unit
This program’s legal focus is effective brief writing. The goal of “Law in Order: Special Briefing Unit” is to (1) demonstrate the consequences of ineffective brief writing in an entertaining way, and (2) provide tips and guidelines for effective brief writing. The theme of the program is inspired by the popular TV drama, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Throughout the story, the presenters play the roles of investigators, prosecutors, suspects (lawyers with ineffective brief writing skills), and the victim of the “crime” (a poorly written brief). The story follows the journey of the investigators (the Special Briefing Unit) as they discover the poorly written brief and investigate the “heinous crimes” committed against it. The structure of the program leaves room for the presenters to add their own flavor, humor, and experience to the lessons presented. Additionally, the program requires audience participation via a discussion panel at the end, which was largely lead by judges volunteering stories of their experience reading briefs from the bench.
