Orange is the New Varsity Blue: From Bribe Agreement to Plea Agreement
This fun, interactive program combines the explosive "Varsity Blues" college admissions scandal with the classic movie "The Paper Chase" to educate the audience on plea agreements. It illustrates the plea negotiation process from the perspective of prosecutors, defense attorneys, and defendants and covers issues such as cooperation, the pros and cons of taking a plea, the risks of a wait-and-see approach, the role of the federal sentencing guidelines, and the impact of the plea agreement at sentencing.
It is structured as a law school class, led by "Professor Slingsfield," with the audience as the class. The professor shows "surveillance video" and a "livestream" of scenes which parody the real college admissions case. The scenes are scripted and acted out live. After each scene, the
professor asks the class questions, which are included in the script. A PowerPoint presentation runs throughout with entertaining media lips as well as substantive material, including excerpts from the sentencing
guidelines. Background materials including pleadings, plea agreements, and articles are provided via the Inn website for those who would like more information.
