Koch, Jr., Supreme Court of Tennessee; Hon. Vicki Miles-LaGrange, U.S. District Court Western District of Oklahoma; and Hon. David B. Sentelle, U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit

This panel will address the need for collegial relationships among members of the judiciary and the need for judges to treat the public and members of the bar with civility and courtesy. The panel will also address the need for judicial intervention in case management and discovery as a basis for elevating professionalism in litigation.

This panel will explore the role of lawyers in the events that led to the current financial crisis and emphasize the activities of those lawyers who were instrumental in responding to the crisis successfully.

PROGRAM 5—Lessons from London—Professionalism and the English Inns of Court

This panel will illustrate how the Inns of Court in London influenced Chief Justice Warren E. Burger and the American Inns of Court movement. The panel will also compare and contrast the London Inns with the American Inns with particular emphasis on the London Inns’ focus on training before starting a law practice and the American Inns’ focus on training after law practice has commenced.

Panel Members: Hon. Stephen G. Breyer, Supreme Court of the United States; Rt. Hon. The Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, Middle Temple/President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom; and Hon. Mr. Justice John L. Murray, Chief Justice of Ireland

The discussion will focus on the status of the legal profession in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Topics will include historical antecedents, legal education, mentoring, ethics, and professionalism.

PROGRAM 7—Special Challenges to 21st Century Lawyers: The Use and Misuse of Technology

This panel will explore challenges facing judges, law firms, and lawyers in the use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. It will also address new cyber-ethics issues arising from social networking and the use of “cloud” computing services, cyber-security issues, inadvertent disclosure of confidential or privileged information through e-mail, and highlight technological advances in the courtrooms and law firms.

This panel will address the need to integrate mentoring into the lawyer’s professional development continuum, explore the unique role of the Inns of Court in professional education and training, explore the American Inns of Court as a useful model for firms that are moving toward an apprenticeship model, and the American Inns of Court as a source of guidance for law school programs that incorporate contact with the bar as one of their components.

Relatively few persons outside the legal profession consider the honesty and ethical standards of the lawyers to be very high. This panel will discuss the role that the news media, popular entertainment, and the profession itself have played in the public’s perception of the legal profession.

This informal discussion will enable Inn leaders to collaborate on how to implement the key concepts from the symposium at their Inns. Bring your lunch and join one of the breakout roundtable discussions led by members of the American Inns of Court Board of Trustees and the American Inns of Court Leadership Council. The focus will be in identifying key take-a-ways to bring back to your Inn.
